Bristol Fashion Week SS17 trend report: The 80's

The 80's are back

The catwalks have been obsessed with all things 80's this season, from oversized ruffles at Gucci to gentle ruching and drapes at Celine. Where the top fashion houses lead, the high street will surely follow, and we have already seen power shoulders, cascading ruffles and extreme sleeves hitting the shops - a throwback to an era of fun and fabulous fashion. Don't reach for the leg warmers just yet though - the modern 80's look is cool, covetable and easy to wear.

Mix in metallics

Top, £30, River Island

Lame was the staple fabric of the decade so reference it now in an of-the-moment off the shoulder top. The ruffles and cut out detail make it the perfect party piece - wear with skinny jeans on a night out for a fantastic alternative to a cocktail dress.

Be bold

Dress, £49, Topshop

An easy way to try the trend is to reference the colour palette of the decade. Primary colours worn with black or navy backgrounds really zing and a simple bodycon dress shape is easy to wear day or night - switch crisp white trainers for barely-there heels to take you seamlessly from work to bar.

Velvet crush

Top, £32, Topshop

The colour of the season works beautifully on a classic 80's blouson shape. The soft puff shape and tie waist is flattering and easy to wear - pair with a bomber jacket and straight leg washed jeans to nail the look.

Ruffle it up

Dress, £75, Warehouse

A decadent purple hue and slightly prom-dress shape already screams 80's princess, but this modern take on a classic shape, combining asymetric folds and draping ruffles means that this is the only frock you'll need this season. Throw a battered leather jacket over the top for a casual vibe, or go all-out with an oversized blazer, sheer tights and skyscraper heels for a showstopping look.
