The 30m x 12m ice rink can cater for 120 people in ten 75 minute sessions each day. Skate hire/changing and refreshment facilities are provided.

It will also 'snow' on the hour every evening to enhance the magical winter experience.

Sue Boor, marketing manager at The Mall, says: "Our Winter Wonderland ice rink has been hugely successful and given people lots of fun over the past few weeks.

"Outdoor ice rinks have become extremely popular in the last couple of years and we're very excited to be bringing a rink to The Mall. It'll be lovely to spend an hour skating outside under trees sparkling with pretty white fairy lights."

Questions & Answers

When should I get there?
Please arrive at least 30 minutes before your allotted/booked session to allow for skate fitting etc.

At what age can I bring my children?
There is no minimum age for children.
Minimum skate size: Children's size 7
We advise parents to use their discretion as to whether the child will enjoy the experience if they are very young.

I've got big feet! Do you have boots to fit me?
The maximum skate size: Adult size 15

Can I bring my own skates?
Yes you can but there is no reduction in the cost

What if it is raining?
The rink can operate in nearly all weather conditions. This is an outdoor event and no refunds will be given due to inclement weather. In the unlikely event that the Duty manager deems it necessary to close the ice rink, alternative sessions will be offered for skating, subject to availability.

What do I do with my bags, coats etc when I am skating?
A cloakroom is available (a small charge will apply)

Do I have to pay to spectate?
All the viewing areas and café are free to access. So come along and watch your friends and family skating and enjoy a cup of frothy hot chocolate.

What should I wear?
You should bring gloves and wear cotton sports socks.
A layer of water often builds up on the ice therefore water-proofs or a change of trousers is often prudent.

ICE SKATING CAN BE HAZARDOUS. ALL PATRONS ARE REMINDED THAT THEY SKATE AT THEIR OWN RISK

RACHEL STEVENS GUINNESS BOOK OF RECORDS ATTEMPT AT THE MALL

Shoppers in Bristol can join forces later today with their pop heroine, Rachel Stevens in an attempt to propel her into the Guinness Book of Records as she embarks on a 24 hour, round the clock mission to visit and perform at 7 cities across the country.

Kicking the day off in Manchester at 8:50am this morning, Rachel is set to arrive at The Mall at 6:30pm for her 5th performance of the day. Performing her recent number 2 smash hit 'Some Girls', Rachel will also meet as many fans as possible and sign autographs until she has to rush off at 7pm to continue her challenge. Rachel will travel through the night and will hopefully achieve 'Mission Accomplished' status just before 8:50am tomorrow morning at Great Ormond Street Children's Hospital in London.

Rachel said; "This is going to be a long day, but it's worth every second if together we manage to set a new record! It's great to be able to go all over the country and see fans and for them to be part of it. We're travelling by car from venue to venue in a big Guinness branded car so you can't miss us - hopefully we won't have any transport delays ...there are too many of us to thumb a ride!"

The attempt has been organised to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Guinness World Records. It will be featured on a two-hour TV programme hosted by Jamie Theakston to be screened this Saturday at 5.55pm on ITV1. Tune in to see Rachel break her record and perform her new single 'More More More' which is released on October 4th.

Fired up about smoking?

IT'S THE BURNING ISSUE - AND NOW THE BIG SMOKE DEBATE COMES TO THE SOUTH WEST

Monday May 24) saw the launch of a six-week regional consultation on smoking in public places.

This will be the first time that people who live or work in the South West will have been asked their views on whether enclosed public places such as restaurants, pubs and shopping centres should become smoke-free.

It will be one of the biggest ever health consultations in the South West and the results will inform local, regional and national policy makers.

This consultation is not about whether people should smoke, it is about where smoking should be allowed.

The consultation is being organised by the South West Regional Public Health Group based at the Government Office for the South West.

People can take part either by filling in one of thousands of printed questionnaires or by logging on to www.bigsmokedebate.com/southwest. The survey is anonymous and the entries will be collated by independent statisticians. The results will be published later this year.

Dr Gabriel Scally, the South West's Director of Public Health, said: "So far we do not have any comprehensive expression of views from the region on smoking in public places. This consultation will lead to better-informed decisions - and that can only be a good thing."

Trade unions, local authorities and health organisations across the South West will be helping to promote the consultation and are organising their own events to launch the Big Smoke Debate.

Questions and Answers on the Big Smoke Debate

Q: Why is this consultation important?
A: Smoking in public places is one of the key health issues of the moment. Whether you only go to a pub once a year or you work in a restaurant every night of the week this is an issue, which affects everyone. It is vital that any policies, which are drafted on this issue, are informed by public opinion. This initiative supports the Department of Health's White Paper 'Choosing Health - a consultation on action to improve people's health'.

Q: Who is organising the consultation?
A: It is being co-ordinated by the South West Regional Public Health Group based at the Government Office for the South West, but the questions on the web site and the response postcard were set by an independent polling organisation. It is important to understand that the consultation is independent and that people can take part anonymously.

Q: Who will collate the results?
A: Again, this will be done by the South West Regional Public Health Group because it has the technical expertise to do so. The web results will be passed on to it by the private firm running the web site. The response postcard will go directly to the group's offices with the data to be collated by independent statisticians.

Q: What happens with the results?
A: These will be published in a publicly available report in the autumn and be sent to key decision makers at a regional and national level. Similar consultation exercises are taking place this year across the country. The South West results will be fed into those to eventually produce a national report.

Q: Couldn't the money be spent on other health initiatives?
A: It is important that policy is developed in line with public opinion. So far we do not have any comprehensive expression of views for the South West on smoking in public places. Investing a small amount of money in research will lead to better-informed decisions and is consistent with the principle of consultation practised everyday in national and local government.

Q: But will smoke-free legislation ever be enacted in the South West?
A: That depends on local opinion but two years ago most people would never have believed that New York and Ireland would be smoke-free yet they are now. It would be foolish not to prepare for the possibility of legislation by gathering the opinions of people in our area. The possibility of local authorities being given powers to enact smoke-free by-laws has not been ruled out. That it is another reason for polling people on their views. Finally, some businesses have adopted smoke-free policies already, such as Pizza Hut. The results of this consultation will be of as much use to them as to the government.

Q: What about the rights of smokers?
A: It is important to stress that this poll is not about whether people should stop smoking. This consultation is all about where people should smoke. There are no questions about whether people should smoke, it is all about asking everybody, smoker and non-smoker equally, where it should be allowed.

Q: How independent is this study?
A: Everyone is being asked for his or her opinion. If people feel strongly then they can vote. Those votes will be anonymous and the results will be published openly underlining its independence from a particular standpoint. Good public polices are built on consensus, not imposing ideas or assuming you know what people want.

Q: Won't those who don't have the Internet or can pick up a survey form be left out?
A: A balance must be struck between how much is spent on this and other projects. This means working out how to reach the maximum amount of people with the money available. This consultation is using methods already tested in other parts of the country and will be promoted through the 12 local tobacco control alliances in the South West. Local authorities, the NHS, trade unions and private companies are involved in spreading the word about the Big Smoke Debate. The turn out should be one of the biggest regional polls carried out on any issue. With a six-week run time and a well co-ordinated publicity campaign it is hoped that anybody who wants to vote can vote.

Q: How will you ensure interested parties don't spoil the vote?
A: The company which runs the web site has programmes in place which rule out a number of responses from one web address and are very efficient at identifying questionable responses. Similarly, the South West Regional Public Health Group has experienced statisticians monitoring the response postcards to spot any concerted effort to swing the result.
