Lesley Garrett performing at The Mall

Lesley Garrett switches on the Christmas Lights at The Mall this year and performs from her New Album.

Britain's most popular soprano Lesley Garrett thrilled her many local fans as she performed live at The Mall at Cribbs Causeway. She sang twice at 6.30pm and 8.30pm on Monday 17th November, the day The Mall extended its weekday opening hours by another hour until 10pm.

The diva, who regularly appears in both opera and in concert, on television and CD, chose The Mall to launch her new album in the West Country. The album So Deep Is The Night is released nationally on the 3rd November 2003.

This year’s event is bigger and, in our opinion, better than ever before – 12 spectacular fashion shows over four days!

For the first time the shows will take place in our stunning Fashion Marquee outside the main entrance of The Mall. This gives us room to have a professional full-length catwalk and seating for 300 people and we’ve decorated the interior in shocking pink, black and silver to give a really glitzy and glamorous feel.

Marks & Spencer will offer you wine and nibbles on arrival and over the next 40 minutes you’ll enjoy a kaleidoscope of colour and style as our models sashay up and down the catwalk in a mouthwatering selection of some of the best fashions here at The Mall.

There are plenty of fashion ideas for the men too and children from the Stagecoach group will model some truly delicious kidswear from the likes of Monsoon, Gap and Next.

You’ll also get the opportunity to see the winning designs in our Student Fashion Design Competition. All 12 final outfits will be modelled in each show. You can view all 12 designs and vote for who you think should win this prestigious competition on this website.

Goody Bags!

Another new touch this year and something we’re particularly excited about is the Goody Bag! Everyone who buys a ticket for one of our shows will automatically receive a Goody Bag packed with £37 worth of really good goodies!

From our principal sponsor Estée Lauder, there’s a Pure Color lipstick worth £14 and a sample of their new fragrance Beyond Paradise.

You’ll also receive the October issue of Prima magazine, a £5 Mall Gift Cheque, a Free Coffee and Cake on Monday voucher from John Lewis worth another £5 (yes, John Lewis will be open every Monday from 1st September!) and a £10 Day Pass into Fitness First at The Venue where you can use all the facilities including exercise classes, the steam room, the sauna room and the aromatherapy room.

Lots of Free Prize Draws and Discount Vouchers.

Everyone attends one of our shows will also be able to enter our Free Prize Draw to win a variety of prizes, including a luxurious Estée Lauder hamper, Swarovski jewellery, Guess watches and Boots Professional Haircare hampers including products from Beverly Cobella, Trevor Sorbie, Toni&Guy, Charles Worthington, John Frieda, Umberto Giannini, and Lee Stafford. A number of fashion retailers will be offering special discounts and further competitions during the 4 day event.

Ticket Sales to support our Fountain Charity Fund.

All the proceeds from ticket sales will go to The Mall’s Fountain Charity Fund which supports charities and voluntary organisations within a 25 mile radius of The Mall. So as well as having a thoroughly good day out, coming to our Fashion Week will help some very worthwhile causes. You can find out more about The Fountain Fund on this website.

Other additional activities include a special guest appearance by Bristol songstress Katie Lewis who came to prominence during Fame Academy and top international designer Paul Costelloe whose beautifully cut clothes are available from John Lewis.

The photograph above features Lucy Ratnett Stagecoach Dance Coach and some of the Stagecoach children rehearsing for Fashion Week in September. Eighteen children between 6 and 12 are involved with the event and will be modelling kidswear from Monsoon, Gap and Next.

New Designer 2003

CAN YOU SPOT A FASHION DESIGNER OF THE FUTURE?

Vote for your favourite design! Here's your chance to vote on who you think should win The Mall's Student Fashion Designer of the Year Competition 2003.

The students were asked to design an outfit for a social occasion - anything from a high society wedding to a restaurant opening. Over 100 students from colleges across the region took up the challenge and entered the competition. This has been whittled down to 12 finalists who are now busy producing their outfit for the final judging session at The Mall's Fashion Week in September.

All 12 outfits will be modelled for the judges during the opening Fashion Show on Wednesday 17th September. The judges will be looking at the students' creativity, innovation and imaginative use of materials, as well as sensitivity to production and consumer needs. The winners will be announced during the Fashion Show by judging panel chairman Jeff Banks. But who would you choose to win? Whose outfit do you think shows the most promise? Would you wear it?

UPDATE - FASHION STUDENTS CELEBRATE AT THE MALL

The winners of The Mall at Cribbs Causeway's Student Fashion Design Competition were Maurizio Grioli from the University of the West of England and Sally Davey of GLOSCAT.

The winners, both 22 years old, each picked up a £1,000 cheque, a crystal trophy and a work experience placement with either Jeff Banks or Planet on the opening day of The Mall's annual Fashion Week event.

22 year old Maurizio, who is originally from Sicily and studying Fashion Textile Design at the University of West of England in Bristol, won the Higher Education award for his Belle Epoque red organza one-sleeved corset and tight-fitting brocade skirt.

Watched by his family who had flown in from Italy especially, Maurizio was very emotional as he said: "I'm so happy, it means so much to me to win. I'm looking forward to the work experience placement and will spend the prize money on my final university collection."

Sally Davey was the winner of the Higher Education category. Sally is studying Fashion and Creative Studies at GLOSCAT in Gloucestershire. Her design was a pale blue strapless evening gown inspired by moving water, designed for a charity ball in support of Water Aid - and she is generously donating her prize money to the charity.

As well as her design, the judges were impressed that Sally had created her own material for her dress, heat-treating the synthetic blue fabric to alter its form and create a shimmering effect with luxurious beading and a fishtail.

She said: "I can't believe I've won. I didn't think I would as the others were so good. I'd love to have my own fashion label one day, so I'm really looking forward to the work placement."

After the show, Jeff Banks said: "The standard was incredibly high and for the winners to already be this good at such a young age - watch this space."

The Mall's marketing manager Sue Boor was one of the judges. "The variety and quality of the finished outfits was just amazing and proves why the UK offers the best fashion education in the world," she said. "There were influences from punk to gothic, tweed tailoring to evening glamour and our audiences have really enjoyed seeing the outfits here on the catwalk."

Nearly 100 students from Higher Education and Further Education establishments across the region entered the competition with a brief to design an outfit for a social occasion. Twelve students were selected as finalists and invited to create their outfits for the final round of judging on the catwalk at The Mall's Fashion Week.

Tiny Planets' white fluffy cosmic creatures, Bing & Bong, will be landing on Planet Bristol on Thursday, 4th September when they make a flying visit from outer space.

Touchdown: 3.30pm to 4.10pm at The Mall at Cribbs Causeway, Bristol

As well as coming face-to-face with the two space-travelling aliens, there will be a whole galaxy of fun and games for the kids to take part in. A children's entertainer will be on hand encouraging the `tots to shake their bots` and sing along to the Tiny Planets theme tune. On the day there will be free balloons and stickers plus an opportunity to enter a colouring competition to win Tiny Planets goody bags. And if that's not enough excitement for one day, there will also be the chance to win Tiny Planets t-shirts, videos and CDs in a game of musical statues.

Bing & Bong are the stars of CiTV's programme, Tiny Planets, aimed at pre-school children aged 3 upwards. They combine excitement and laughter with an educational twist, as they travel the universe figuring out important stuff.
